Local Area Network (LAN)
LAN is where computers/devices connect privately. It can be as simple as two devices directly connected or they can connect with a switch in the middle. Speed is much higher in LAN connection and controlled by you.
Some of the examples of LAN are home, office building, or school.

Wide Area Network (WAN)
Communication between devices outside the network is called WAN. Mostly it refers to a large geographical area but it can be between your home to your friend’s house. Speed can be slow (depending on your Internet) and cannot be controlled by you. Most people called this the Internet.
Examples of WAN are cities, computers in different nations, etc.

Both connections are connected over the Internet or via Virtual Private Network (VPN).
